Hello, this is Stephanie and this is Talk, Tales and Trivia, the show where I talk about pop culture and trivia. I'm a mad researcher on pop culture and trivia and I love doing that for you because I want you to stump your family and friends. It is so much fun.
This episode is a great one because we are getting to that season where it's cool outside as January and February. It's after the holidays and it's a wintery bluster mix of rain or snow or sleet or even a little bit of a just a cooler weather. And we want to be at home with our family and friends. It sounds so cozy and I love cozy and so I will plan on that. But guess what? Early February starts our wonderful season of well Super Bowl and the Oscars. Who can wait for that? Well I can hardly wait for it and that is why I am going to talk about this topic here because well it goes along with those family and friend type events that we have all the time. And that involves around the Super Bowl and the Oscars. That's right. If we have family and friends over, we want to have snacks and I am a big snacker.
I believe in snack pockets and all my clothing. I believe in snacks in my home and I believe when I go over to a friend's house bringing snacks over to their house as well. And this episode we are going to talk about popcorn, one of the most delicious snacks of them all. Well, did you know that popcorn has become the favoritest of favorite junk foods? If it's considered a junk food, which maybe perhaps it may not be. There is no denying that popcorn has been in our culture for a very long time. The archeologists discovered that people have known about popcorn for thousands of years. Can you believe that? In Mexico for example, remnants of popcorn have been found that date back to 3,600 BC. That is a long time ago. Popcorn's assess-ability increased rapidly in the 1890s with Charles craters invention of the popcorn maker. Well, what would we be without the popcorn maker?
By the turn of the century, craters had created and deployed street carts equipped with steam powered popcorn makers. He's so smart. He realized that people on the street would love to have a bag of warm popcorn. Another reason for its dominance over other snacks was it's appealing aroma when popped something that street vendors used to their advantage when selling popcorn. It is such a great idea. And during the great depression, popcorn was fairly inexpensive at five to 10 cents a bag and that is cheap and it became very popular because of that. And while other businesses failed, well, the popcorn business thrived and became a source of income for many struggling farmers, which is so cool, including the Redenbacher family of the famous Orville Redenbacher, the famous popcorn brand. That's right. And also guess what? Popcorn is a popular snack food for sporting events and in movie theaters since the 1930s. It is simply a snack that is good for everybody everywhere and that is a great thing.
Popcorn is a high in fiber, relatively low in calories snack and has a very low energy density. There are all characteristics of a weight loss friendly food. If you know when to stop! Listen, regular plain old popcorn is a great low calorie food, but it gets a little dicey when we have all these added flavors to it and added butter. You have all the options available to you nowadays. When I was growing up, all those options were not available.
But now I want to talk about some specialty popcorns that are very special to me. I will tell you. Cracker Jack, what is Crackerjack all about? Well, I know that when I was a kid I loved Cracker Jack and I loved the little prizes at the very bottom, which they stopped making in 2016, by the way. But let me tell you, Cracker Jack is an American brand of snack food consisting of molasses flavoring, caramel coated popcorn and peanuts, well known for being packaged with a prize of trivial value inside. And you know, we all love prizes.
The Crackerjack name and slogan, the more you eat, the more you want. We're registered as a trademark in 1896 and so it has stuck with that food. But so food historians consider it the first junk food. Hmm. Really? Well, let me tell you something. I love Cracker Jack and I eat on occasion. Not a lot. It's not really junk food to me. It's just a treat. Cracker Jack is famous for its connection to baseball lore. The Cracker Jack brand has been owned and marketed by Frito Lay since 1997 I guess it got its first marketing gig with, take me out to the ballgame. The song that is sung really pretty much at every baseball game where it says, buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack. How can we not love that song and not love Cracker Jack?
Next up is Jiffy Pop. Ah, what a memory this has for me. This product contains popcorn kernels, oil and flavoring agents. What are flavoring agents? We don't know, but we don't care. Well, some of us do, but guess what? I have it so rarely that it's a treat as well. The popcorn kernels pop right on the stove using a heavy gauge aluminum foil pan and that's what makes it so cool. Jiffy pop is one of the only popcorn brands that continues to sell popcorn and this form and it is so wonderful to remember this as a memory that I had when I was a child and my mother would always get Jiffy Pop for us to eat when we had babysitters coming over. It's such a great thing to think about and a cozy thing to think about. A nice little memory of us being indoors cozy and watching TV with our Jiffy Pop popcorn. Hey, with 31 calories per cup, air popped. Popcorn contains much fewer calories than many other popular snack foods, and that is thumbs up for me. I love my popcorn and any form.
Hey, did you know that you could get popcorn and any flavor that you want? Practically any flavor? And I'm not kidding. Yep. The Popcorn Factory for example, has every flavor, sweet, salty, sour, they have it all, but my favorite is a great find for me and that is bacon flavored popcorn. Whew. How can you beat that? And I will have all the links in the show notes. This is J and D's, bacon flavored popcorn and you can get it on Amazon as well as all the other popcorns that I've talked about. There will be links in the show notes to everything that I talk about in this episode.
